Most beginner crossbow packages ship with a basic 4x32 multi-reticle scope bundled in the box - it's how bows like the Barnett Whitetail Hunter II and Killer Instinct Lethal 405HD keep the total price down. That stock optic gets you shooting on day one, but it's usually the first thing people replace once they know what they actually want from a scope.

This guide isn't a ranking of our own - it's a straight look at what's currently sold as a standalone crossbow scope, grouped by the three things that actually change how one behaves in the field: how much zoom it has, what kind of reticle it uses, and whether "rangefinding" on the box means an actual laser or just a set of holdover marks.

Magnification: how much zoom a crossbow scope actually needs

Crossbow shots are short compared to rifle shots - most hunting shots land inside 40 yards, and even a long shot rarely goes past 60. That's why crossbow scopes cluster around 1.5-5x or 2-7x variable zoom rather than the 3-9x or higher common on rifle scopes: there's little reason to magnify a target you're not going to shoot at 200 yards. Fixed 4x scopes exist at the budget end and work fine if you don't need to zoom out for closer shots or in for judging a target before drawing.

Reticle type: multi-reticle, illuminated, and true rangefinding

Scopes in this category fall into three tiers. The cheapest are fixed multi-reticle scopes: a crosshair with several extra aim points stacked below it, each meant for a specific yardage, with no illumination and no moving parts. Above that are illuminated multi-reticle scopes, sometimes marketed as "rangefinder reticles" - the aim points are still fixed and still calibrated to a speed range you dial in yourself, but a red or green LED makes them visible in low light. The top tier is true laser rangefinding: the scope itself measures distance electronically and adjusts or displays the correct aim point, no manual dialing or holdover guessing involved.

Match the scope's speed rating to your crossbow

Multi-reticle and illuminated scopes calculate their lower aim points from an assumed arrow speed, usually printed as a range like "250-425 fps" or "380-505 fps." If your crossbow's advertised speed falls outside that window, the top aim point can still be close but the lower marks will be progressively wrong - a scope built for 380-505 fps bows is the wrong choice for a 350 fps beginner package, and vice versa. Check the fps range on the box against your bow's spec sheet before buying, not after.

Do I need an illuminated reticle on a crossbow scope?

Only if you hunt in low light - dawn, dusk, or a shaded stand. For daytime target shooting a non-illuminated multi-reticle scope like the Barnett 17060 works fine at a fraction of the price of an illuminated one.

What magnification is best for a crossbow?

Most crossbow shots land inside 40 yards, so a 1.5-5x or 2-7x variable scope covers the range you'll actually use. A fixed 4x scope is cheaper and simpler if you don't need to zoom out for closer shots.

Is a laser rangefinding scope like the Burris Oracle X worth the extra cost?

It removes the guesswork of matching reticle holdover marks to your bow's actual speed, which matters most from a tree stand where judging distance by eye is harder. It costs several times more than an illuminated multi-reticle scope, so it mainly pays off if you hunt at unpredictable, varying ranges.

Will a better scope fix a crossbow that isn't grouping well?

No. Group size mostly comes down to the rail, bolt weight and cocking consistency, not the optic. A better scope makes it easier to see and hold a consistent aiming point - it doesn't correct a mechanical accuracy problem.
